Proteins as Soft Matter: Interactions, Phase Behavi- Our and Health Research

چکیده
INTERACTIONS, PHASE BEHAVIOUR AND HEALTH RESEARCH Protein-protein interactions govern phase behaviour and stability in protein solutions. For this reason, they are relevant to the understanding of physiological and pathological processes, and crucial for the formulation and storage of biopharmaceuticals. Thus, a better understanding of protein-protein interactions and their effects as a function of solution conditions is bound to have an impact on a variety of health-related topics.

Spikes matter for phase-locked bursting in inhibitory neurons.
We show that inhibitory networks composed of two endogenously bursting neurons can robustly display several coexistent phase-locked states in addition to stable antiphase and in-phase bursting. This work complements and enhances our recent result [Jalil, Belykh, and Shilnikov, Phys. Rev. E 81, 045201(R) (2010)] that fast reciprocal inhibition can synchronize bursting neurons due to spike intera...
متن کاملImplications of protein polymorphism on protein phase behaviour.
The phase behaviour of small globular proteins is often modeled by approximating them as spherical particles with fixed internal structure. However, changes in the local environment of a protein can lead to changes in its conformation rendering this approximation invalid. We present a simple two-state model in which protein conformation is not conserved and where the high-energy, non-native sta...
متن کاملO-32: Endometrial Secretome and Its Role in Uterine Functions
Background Earlier it was believed that uterine fluid (uf) or secretions are not relevant after the embryo implantation in humans. However, recent reports suggest that uterine secretions continue to play important role till the first trimester of human pregnancy. Evidences also suggest that uf mirrors endometrial functions or dysfunctions. Considering the relevance of uf in endometrial function...

متن کاملCharacterizing protein crystal contacts and their role in crystallization: rubredoxin as a case study.
The fields of structural biology and soft matter have independently sought out fundamental principles to rationalize protein crystallization. Yet the conceptual differences and the limited overlap between the two disciplines have thus far prevented a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon to emerge. We conduct a computational study of proteins from the rubredoxin family that bridges the ...
